At Albion Stone, safety and innovation are at the heart of our mining operations. In 2019, we made a significant investment in an Epiroc Boltec S bolting rig, a state-of-the-art machine that has revolutionised the way we install roof and rib support in our Bowers, Jordans, and Stonehills Mines. Bought for £500,000, it remains our most expensive piece of machinery to date, but its impact on both safety and efficiency has been invaluable.
Traditionally, roof and rib bolting required personnel to work closer to unsupported ground, increasing the risk of injury. The Boltec S eliminates this danger by allowing the operator to install bolts and mesh from a secure, enclosed cab, positioned well away from the working face. This ensures that those carrying out bolting operations are fully protected, reducing their exposure to potentially hazardous conditions.
Beyond its safety benefits, the Boltec S has significantly increased the efficiency of our operations. The machine has drastically reduced the time required to install bolts, allowing for quicker and more streamlined mining processes. Other key benefits include:
The Boltec S remains the most advanced bolting machine in operation within any UK mine, reinforcing our ongoing commitment to investing in cutting-edge technology that enhances both safety and efficiency. By integrating world-class equipment into our Portland Stone extraction process, we continue to set new standards in the industry, ensuring the well-being of our workforce while maintaining the highest levels of operational performance.
At Albion Stone, we believe that innovation and safety go hand in hand. Our investment in the Boltec S is just one example of how we are continuously striving to improve working conditions and efficiency across our mines.
Albion Stone, a fourth generation family business pride ourselves on having a helpful and skilled workforce as well as modern and traditional manufacturing process to enable us to produce the highest quality Portland Stone with minimal environmental impact.
