Scope of Project:
Design and sculpture of piece of Portland stone as part of a public art scheme.
The sculpture, entitled ‘Sailing By’ by Hamish Horsley, is located at the Bryant Homes’ development at Shapwick Road in Hamworthy.
The Portland Stone artwork was commissioned and paid for by Bryant Homes at Harbour Reach as part of a public art scheme approved by Borough of Poole’s Culture and Community Service. Carved in Mr Horsley’s London studio, the sculpture was brought to the site for installation in February 2007.
The sculpture comprises a series of standing stones arranged to dynamic effect. Its silhouette reflects visual elements of the boats’ masts and sails in the harbour beyond the site, and frames views in either direction. Its presence complements the contemporary architecture of the surrounding housing. Bryant Homes at Harbour Reach is the first residential scheme to be developed in Hamworthy and is a major part of the area’s regeneration scheme.
The development is transforming the waterfront in Hamworthy and providing a blend of contemporary apartments and homes. Most of the properties at Harbour Reach offer panoramic views of Poole Harbour, Arne Nature Reserve and the Isle of Purbeck. Further views extend to Brownsea Island and the Sandbanks Peninsula.
The piece sits at Harbour Reach development, situated on either side of a Borough of Poole pedestrian and cycle path which forms a link from Poole’s lifting bridge to the water’s edge at Hamworthy.
